A 7 day painting workshop in Yorkshire with Bella Green
July 17 – 24 2020
Do you prefer a ‘painterly’ approach in your work? Or do go for a more ‘graphic’ way of painting? And what do these terms really mean? All painters use the visual language of tone, colour, shape and texture to depict their subject matter, but how they choose to do it is a matter of personal ‘style’. We will explore this and more.
Once we have mastered some basics, and this can be an ongoing study, finding our own voice in painting is what we all aim for. If, in your time painting you have never considered this, but simply just let it unfold as it will, then this workshop offers the opportunity to really get to grips with what it is that excites you in making paintings and how you can make ‘style’ choices and develop techniques that will help develop those qualities in your work.
We will look at what makes a painting ‘painterly’ and what constitutes a more ‘graphic’ style. You can have combinations of both, so there is no need for a black and white choice in this. But it can help to focus on each approach separately, and then see which you have an affinity for.
We will explore using gesture, big and small, and the different kinds of brushes and tools for this. We will also look at using line in different ways, adding it afterwards or using it from the beginning. The degree of representation you choose will also be an area to be considered, as will colour choices and the use of limited palettes to add atmosphere and enhance the feeling you want in your painting.
The course is suitable for all levels of experience. Beginners will find lots of information and choices to try out, and experienced artists will likely discover something new to add to their existing methods of developing their chosen style.
You should bring the medium of your choice, but from a drying point of view, acrylics are likely the best medium. Bella will demonstrate mainly acrylics, oils and mixed media with pastel and other drawing materials. A full check list of suggested items will be sent to you on booking. Each day there will be a short talk, slide show, or demo on aspects of ‘style’ followed by one to one tuition in the studio or out of doors wherever you are working.
